Although everyone experiences ups and downs in their life, often we can dip down into periods that begin to overwhelm us with sadness, anger, loneliness, and isolation. Some may find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning while others lose interest in activities they used to enjoy or people they used to spend time with. Depression can leave you not wanting to eat or sleep, or eating or sleeping more than your norm. Some depression is caused by circumstance while other depression can be a result of a chemical or physical change in the brain or body. Feelings of depression are on a continuum, varying from day to day.
I work with my clients struggling with depression to provide a holistic picture of treatment. Some individuals can make lifestyle changes to facilitate a happier state while others need to begin an antidepressant (prescribed by a medical doctor). I work with individuals to form a plan to fight the depression that works best for them. I feel counseling is very beneficial to many individuals struggling with depression, in that it provides a supportive environment that helps them not feel alone while figuring out how to get their mood back on track.
